The idea of the Spring Fair was to consolidate the idea of ‘one Main Street’; promote Buxton as an interesting and exciting place to be; provide a show-case for new and existing local businesses, community groups, artists and entertainers; generate a positive, optimistic feeling about the town.
By ‘Main Street’ we mean Spring Gardens, the Crescent, Slopes, Market Place and High Street. We filled the whole of this area with stalls, activities, exhibitions and entertainment of all kinds:
- a total of 115 stalls – clubs, charities, small traders, artistsand ‘have a go’ activities
- many shops extended their frontage or held special events
- a full programme of music, dance, street theatre, poetry and book-reading at four separate locations
- thousands of people thronged the streets
Feedback from the public and from stall-holders was overwhelmingly positive, some shops claimed their best trading day in years, and the next issue of the Buxton Advertiser headlined with “Spring Fair Boosts Buxton’s Economy”.
We were inundated with calls to make this an annual event, and so in 2014 at least we did it again.
