In summer 2014 HPBC launched a competitive tender process, seeking an independent operator for all the markets in the High Peak. Buxton Town Team appplied to take on the Buxton market, operating on Tuesday and Saturday on the Market Place. We prepared business plans, funding proposals, presentations and so on, and in August 2015 the Council accepted our bid and offered us a 5 year contract.
The new markets launched in spring 2016. The Tuesday market is traditional, selling everyday goods such as food, clothing, household goods and garden products. The Saturday market combines the regular stalls with an additional focus on for instance ‘food and drink’ or ‘craft, quirky and vintage’.
We set up a separate company, Buxton Markets CIC, which is owned by and operates for the benefit of the people of Buxton. Please follow the link to see details of how you can become a member, how the company is set up, what it aims to achieve and last but not least, how your organisation can have a stall there.
While the market isn’t yet as big as we expect it will be, we’re well on the way to re-establishing a thriving market in Buxton.
