We established this project because Buxton was nominated for the Great Town Award 2014 by the Academy of Urbanism. The other short listed towns were Cork and Hastings. We organised the visit to Buxton by the Academy judges in August 2013 working with High Peak Borough Council, University of Derby Buxton, Vision Buxton and Buxton Festival. The judges were given a tour of the wider town to set the context for presentations later in the day on strategy and plans for Buxton. One of the highlights of the day was a reception attended by representatives from many voluntary groups and local small businesses.
The result of the Great Town Award was announced on Friday 8th November 2013. Cork was the winner. However we learnt a huge amount from all the work we carried out for The Academy of Urbanism’s visit and know that this will be useful in the future. We’re also proud that Buxton was one of three shortlisted towns and confident that Buxton remains a great place to live, work and visit.
